It Really is a Battle for the Soul of America

The die is cast. The main event: Joe Biden vs The Don. The majority of Americans don’t want this race. Not you two again. Ugh! Have we no imagination? Guess not. But imagine this: It is January 6th and Donald J. Trump is sworn in as the next president. We might not love the candidates but the stakes couldn’t be higher.

There is so much hand wringing about Joe Biden’s age, his “cognitive” decline. I get it. Yes, he looks a bit frail. Yes, he makes gaffs (he has always made them…part of what makes Joe, Joe!) However, have you ever seen him say anything remotely like this:

“Jets and tanks and everything you can think of. Goggles. Night goggles,” he said. “They didn’t used to fight at night. Now they do, because they have goggles. They have better goggles than we have.”

WTF? Yes, The Don rambled this during his Super Tuesday victory speech. Goggles? Who has better goggles? It sounds like the free association of someone with a diagnosable thought disorder. All I know is that we all better put on our night-time goggles to clearly see what’s  going on and create a fair playing field in this war for the soul of our country.

Last week The Don hosted Victor Orban of Hungary at Mar-a-lago where he praised the autocrat as a great leader.

He has stated very clearly that he wants to be a dictator on day one.

If president he will serve up Ukraine for lunch to Putin. He would also encourage Israel to wipe the Palestinians off the map

The Conservative Heritage Foundation’s, a conservative think-tank, has created a blueprint for a second Trump term. Here’s the overall thrust of the “Mandate for Leadership.” It is an authoritarian restructuring of the executive branch, designed around The Don. Its main tenets call for politicizing of the federal government, with presidential appointees replacing career officials at every turn and agencies and offices abolished on overtly ideological grounds. We can see a model for this by looking at the purge of the RNC, and which for all intents and purposes should be known as the TNC: “The Trump National Party.” Or we could also call it The Trump Legal Defense Fund as he siphons off money from the RNC to pay his legal bills.

The Heritage vision actually treats the law as an impediment to conservative governance. In other words, their agenda should be enacted by any means possible, regardless of the law. That suggests The Don should have limitless power to do what he wants, including using the Department of Justice to round up and prosecute all he perceives as his enemies. And the list is long: from politicians, to citizens, the media as well as his promise to round up undocumented immigrants in internment camps. Here’s what he said recently at a rally: “Other countries were emptying their prisons of young people and sending them across the border. I don’t know if you call them people. They’re not people, in my opinion, they are animals” He has also referred to immigrants as vermin who are poisoning the blood of our nation.

Dehumanization of others is an essential strategy to justify cruel treatment of entire groups of people. That’s what Hitler did by selling the idea that Jews and Gays were less than human. That’s what White America has done to justify its treatment of blacks and its indigenous people throughout its history.

The plan champions a concerted effort to make the federal government a vehicle for the upward distribution of wealth.

Both Trump and Republicans in Congress want to extend his 2017 tax cuts in which the majority of which would benefit the highest income earners. The Don also wants to reduce the corporate rate which will further tax the reserves of the federal government. To pay for this, both The Don and Republicans would almost certainly take an ax to the social safety net, targeting Medicaid, food stamps and other programs for low-income and working Americans. Trump has even said he is open to cutting Medicare and Social Security to pay for the tax cuts.

We should also expect a second Trump administration to resume the effort to repeal the Affordable Care Act, as well as try to unravel as much of the climate spending in the Inflation Reduction Act as possible. He would undo much of the progress we have made toward mitigating climate change. (TRump” On day one I will dismantle the EPA. (“Drill baby, drill.”)

There will also be a move to create a 16 week federal ban on abortion, undo freedoms of the LGBTQ community and place a ban on Muslims entering the country.

Ultimately, the overarching plan is not to govern the country, but to rule over others. In a recent speech in Ohio, he promised “If I don’t get elected, it’s going to be a bloodbath for the whole — that’s going to be the least of it. It’s going to be a bloodbath for the country.” He also said that if he didn’t win: “I don’t think you’re going to have another election, or certainly not an election that’s meaningful.”

It’s a pretty stark picture. To drive the point of how dangerous he and his cronies are, let’s look at Mark Robinson, the current Lt. Governor of North Carolina..

Here’s some of his greatest hits.

He condemned “transgenderism” and “homosexuality” as “filth.” Regarding transgender students he stated they should “find a corner outside somewhere to go.”

He said Christians should be led by men, not women. And on at least one occasion, he explicitly called to upend American tradition on God’s role in government stating: “There is no separation of church and state.”

He once quoted Adolf Hitler on Facebook.“There is a REASON the liberal media fills the airwaves with programs about the NAZI and the ‘6 million Jews’ they murdered,” Robinson, the state’s lieutenant governor, wrote in one 2017 post. His anti-semitism is legion. In 2018, Robinson, who is Black, offered some thoughts about what he seemed to see as a Jewish plot behind the hit movie “Black Panther.” The title character was “created by an agnostic Jew and put to film by satanic Marxist,” calling the movie “trash” that was “created to pull the shekels” from the pockets of Black people.

He described the Parkland school shooting survivors who pushed for gun control as “spoiled, angry, know it all children.”

Beyoncé’s songs sound “satanic,” and Jay-Z is “demonic.” Michelle Obama is a man.

Taking a page from The Don’s playbook, the North Carolina publication The Assembly, detailed in January, that Robinson has been delinquent on taxes and repeatedly filed for bankruptcy.

The lieutenant governor is in the news for a recently unearthed video from 2020 in which he said, “I absolutely want to go back to the America where women couldn’t vote.”

The Don just loves, loves, loves, him. In fact, Robinson has the Don’s full-throated support. His endorsement makes one’s head spin.

“Martin Luther King on steroids. I think you’re better than Martin Luther King,” he told Robinson at a rally in Greensboro, N.C.. “I think you are Martin Luther King times two.”

Fair to say that MLK is raging in his grave!
